He's in Montreal on Feb 17th, but unfortunately I can't make it (giggin') so if anybody could post a review that would be great. He's really in my top 5 favourite musician. I saw him in 2000 at Montreal jazz fest and it was fabulous. Arturo is not only a virtuso trumpeter, but an awesome pianist and scat singer and a killer latin percussionist.
I emailed him a couple weeks ago to know who was his touring drummer but haven't received an answer yet. Whoever he gets is gonna smoke.
But if I find out Negro got the gig, I'll definitely need a sub...

I was just looking for a CD of his in a store today, it's called MY PASSION FOR THE PIANO - and the drummer on it is EXCELLENT... I don't remember his name, but I will check cause he reminded me of Weckl a bit. So anyhow, he is a master trumper player right? But on this album he is on the piano, and it's incredible...

Ernesto Simpson from Cuba plays drums on "My passion for the piano".
Weckl actually plays on Arturo's 1st american release "Flight to freedom". It was just after his defection from Cuba with the help of Dizzy Gillespie who organized the escape through Europe while Arturo (former Irakere lead trumpet) was on tour.
There's a cool movie on Arturo's life called "For love or country" with Andy Garcia as Arturo. Should be available in any videoclub.
I will make an effort to go see him in Montreal. Thanks for sharing this info!
Ernesto is a great player. He's one of the few drummers in NYC capable of subbing for Hass in Manhattan Vibes. I saw Carlock fumble on that gig 2 years ago.
Ernesto is wonderful, go check him out. He's had Arturo gig for 2 years already. Keep me posted if it's him on drums this time around.
